아주 늧은 나이에 결혼을 해서 손자 같은 아들을 둔 친구가 있다. 맨해탄에 살고 있는데 코로나 바이러스로 아이들 썸머스쿨이 취소가 되버리는 바람에 커네티컷에 두 달 SUMMER HOUSE를 렌트했다. 이벤트의 반만 쫒아 다녀도 여름방학이 끝난다는 ” 더 맨해탄”이 올해는 갈 곳이 없어진 것이다. 그녀는 애가 어리니 덩달아 자신도 유아틱해진다고 깔깔댄다. 어린 자녀와 썸머 조크 퀴즈를 하는데 은근 재미 있다고 …. 하다가… 근데 말이야 …. 하면서 하는 말. 8살 아이가 내는 썸머 조크 20개를 거의 알아 맞추지를 못했고, 정답을 알려주면 아하~~ 하하 하하 싱거운 웃음이 나오면서 속으로 이런 생각이 들었다고 한다. 이렇게 미국에 오래 살았는데 왜 미국식 발상이 안되지?하고. 여기에 옮기면서 나도 같은 생각을 하게 됐다. 뜻을 모르나 말을 모르나 그런데 왜 정답을 내기가 어려울까? 무더운 여름밤 평범한 미국 가정에서 더위를 쫒으며 아이스크림 내기를 하는 썸머 조크, 내게는 무더위다.
